Having taken their fill of the delicious tea prepared by Matt and Vicky Lewis, Castlethorpe took to the field, some doing a little fielding practice before the innings got under way. It started well. Syed opened the bowling with Garry and Syed had Radway's Squire caught by Jamie for one in the fifth over with the score on only seven. The score doubled before the next wicket fell two overs later, as Syed trapped Watkins LBW for four. Two overs later with just one run added to the score, Hibberd was Syed's third victim, bowled for six. The new batsmen took four overs to progress the total to 25 before the other Hibberd was caught behind for one. Pick and Rutherford counter-attacked for Radway, putting on 21 runs in just three overs. The partnership was ended by new bowler Atif, who replaced Garry in the 16th over and promptly bowled Pick for 19. Just two overs later, he also bowled Walsh for two. Syed completed a fine bowling performance in his last over when he had Walker out LBW for one with Radway's score still not up to fifty. Radway needed 39 more runs to win with just three wickets remaining, and Syed had finished an excellent spell with five for thirteen. Garry came back to replace Syed and had A Douthwaite bowled for nought in the 21st over. 51-8. The bowling of Garry and Atif was tight, restricting Radway to 59-8 as Garry completed his overs, finishing with figures of 10-3-33-1. Now Adesh partnered Atif in the bowling attack and took the next wicket in the 29th over, bowling Rutherford for 32 but not before the score had climbed to 78-9.
Both sides were in touching distance of a win. Adesh finished his over without conceding a run - a wicket maiden. The thirtieth over from Atif went for three singles. 81-9. Adesh conceded just two in the 31st over. 83-9. The Castlethorpe fielders were looking to field sharply, seeking the final wicket. Atif conceded three runs in the next over. 86-9. Radway needed two runs to win. Adesh bowled a maiden over. Still the score was 86-9. Unfortunately the first ball from Atif found a gap between two fielders and the Radway batsmen took the two required they needed to claim a tense win.
It was an incredibly close match and disappointing to lose it, but what a phenomenal effort to take it so close. The bowling and fielding effort was outstanding. The batting total was just not large enough for us to defend, but it was close.
Take heart chaps. A few wins and we will be in the top half of the table. Last season, after six matches, we only had 33 points. We are in a better position this season than last. Keep up the effort and things will click soon.
